When Is the Best Time to Pave a Driveway in Ontario? A Month-by-Month Guide
Paving has a season. Here's the month-by-month guide to driveway paving in Ontario — when conditions are best, when crews book up, and when to lock in your estimate.
Unlike a lot of home projects, paving can’t be done whenever you feel like it. Asphalt is temperature-sensitive, and Ontario’s climate gives a real, hard window. If you’re planning a driveway in Aurora or anywhere in the GTA, here’s how the calendar actually works — and why when you book matters as much as when the work happens.

Why temperature is the whole story
Hot-mix asphalt is laid at high temperature and needs to be compacted before it cools. If the ground is too cold, the asphalt stiffens too fast, you can’t compact it properly, and the result is a weak surface that fails early.
The practical rule: asphalt paving needs ground temperatures above about 10°C. That single fact sets the entire season.
The Ontario paving calendar
May — season opens
By mid-spring the ground has thawed and warmed enough to pave. May is a great time to get the work done — conditions are reliable and crews aren’t yet at their busiest. It’s also the smart time to book, before the summer rush.
June to August — peak season
This is the heart of paving season. Warm ground, long days, dependable conditions — the best window for quality work. The catch: it’s also when everyone wants their driveway done, so good crews fill their schedules weeks out. If you want summer work, you need to have booked in spring.

September to October — closing window
Early fall still paves well. Ground temperatures hold up through September and often into October, and crews start to free up. This is a good window — but it’s last call. As October ends, the risk of the ground dropping below 10°C climbs, and the season closes.
November to April — off-season
Through the Ontario winter, hot-mix asphalt paving stops. The ground is too cold for a durable result, and reputable contractors won’t lay asphalt they know will fail.
But the off-season isn’t dead time. It’s the best time to plan: get your estimates, compare materials, ask your permit questions, and book your spot. Contractors have time to talk in the winter, and you’ll be first in line when the season opens.
Book early — this is the part people get wrong
Here’s the mistake we see every year: a homeowner decides in July that they want their driveway done “this summer.” By then, peak-season schedules are full, and they’re either waiting until fall or until next year.
The work happens in summer. The booking should happen in late winter or spring. Treat them as two separate dates:
- Feb–April: get quotes, choose your material, book your crew
- May–October: the work gets done
Lining it up that way is the difference between paving this year and paving next year.

A note for Aurora homeowners
Aurora’s mix of established homes and newer estate developments means a wide range of driveway sizes — and bigger jobs need to be slotted into a crew’s schedule earlier. If you’ve got a long estate driveway or a project that might need a permit (a widening or a new entrance), build in extra lead time. The permit step alone can add weeks before any paving starts.
The simple takeaway
- Asphalt paving season in Ontario runs May through October
- June–August gives the best conditions — and the fullest schedules
- Book in late winter or spring to get summer work
- Winter is for planning, not paving
